From such troubled beginnings, the Sunraysia district centred on Mildura and extending on both sides of the river from Nyah, just north of Swan Hill, to lock 9 sixty kilometres downstream of the Murray -Darling junction has become one of Australia's major horticultural regions. Vineyards occupy 80% of the irrigated land which is over 25% of the total area planted to vines in Australia. They produce approximately 80% of Australia's dried vine fruit crop, 13% of wine production and 32% of the table grape crop. In addition almost 20% of the citrus crop is grown there as well as apricots, peaches, almonds, avocados, olives, vegetables and melons. The region is also a significant domestic tourist destination.
