The Archaeological Geology Research Group exists within the Department of Earth, Ecological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toledo. The group is lead by Professor James ('Jim') A. Harrell (curriculum vitae) and includes two other faculty members: Associate Professors V. Max Brown and Donald J. Stierman.
J. A. Harrell's research is primarily concerned with the topographical and petrological survey of ancient Egyptian stone quarries in Egypt and northern Sudan. Summaries of the results to date are presented at Ancient Egyptian Quarries. The summaries include: lists of hardstone and softstone quarries with their precise locations, stone types, and ages; maps of quarry locations; and color images (JPEG files) of polished slabs of quarry stones. A list of J. A. Harrell's publications in archaeological geology is available at Publications List.
V. M. Brown works with J. A. Harrell on some of his Egyptian projects and has interests in biblical geoarchaeology, and D. J. Stierman is currently engaged in the geophysical reconnaissance of archaeological sites in Honduras and northern Ohio.
