CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS:

1. Petrology of stones used in ancient Egyptian sculptures and monuments, and the geoarchaeology of the quarries from which the stones were obtained. Quarries included date mainly from the Dynastic/Pharaonic and Greco-Roman periods, but also from the medieval Islamic period. It is expected that this research will lead to the publication of a reference book entitled "Atlas of Ancient Egyptian Quarry Stones", which will be co-authored with V. Max Brown. A related and on-going project concerns the reuse of ancient Pharaonic, Ptolemaic and Roman stones in the medieval Islamic buildings of Cairo, Egypt. To date I have made 16 trips to Egypt in support of this research [in '89 twice, '90, '91, '92, '93, '94, '95, '96, '97, '98, '99, '00, '01 twice, and '02] with another trip planned for summer 2003.

2. Archaeological geology of the Greco-Roman port city of Berenike on the southeastern Red Sea coast in Egypt. I am serving as the site geologist on a joint U.S.-Dutch excavation that will continue for several more years. The expedition is co-directed by Dr. Steven Sidebotham of the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, U.S.A.; and Dr. Willeke Wendrich of Leiden University in Leiden, The Netherlands. To date I have made 5 trips to Berenike [in '95, '96, '97, '99, and '01] and 1 to Coptos (Qift) [in '02] in support of this research with another tentatively planned for winter 2003.

3. Archaeological geology of ancient Egyptian and Napatan-Meroitic quarries and mines in northern Sudan. To date I have made 2 trips to Sudan [in '96 and '97] in support of this research with another tentatively planned for 2003.
