Map Ref.4. Parkes Place. This sculpture is attached to an exterior wall of the Gallery's main restaurant, "The Brasserie". It is above the stairway leading down into the Winter Garden.
The grey, concrete wall of the Gallery building provides an attractive background for this work which has been painted red.
When this work was being created, Hall was teaching at the Canberra School of Art but by the time it was installed, he had already returned to live in England.
Hall likes to think about, and allude to, the possible effects the lines of longitude and latitude have on everyday life. Whilst these lines are invisible to the eye and so easily forgotten, Hall thinks that the very fact that they exist is sufficient to cause wonder. By drawing attention to these lines, Hall hopes to make viewers conscious of their personal continuity in time and space. For this reason, "Canberra (large)" is a work to contemplate before entering the Winter Garden with its laid slate paving.
