Bert [Herbert] Flugelman was born in Vienna on 28 January 1923. In 1938 he emigrated to Australia. Between 1947 and 1950 he studied sculpture at the National Art School in Sydney. He then left Australia to travel and work in Europe and America.
In 1956 Flugelman returned to Australia and began teaching. In the early 1970s he bought a site in the rainforest at Jamberoo near Wollongong. This site has now developed into a magnificent retreat. The rainforest provides him with the inspiration for the creation of new works which are now often made from found timber.
Flugelman still has the maquette for "Cones", shown in this illustration.
