Neil Dawson was born in Christchurch. He studied art at the Canterbury School of Fine Art. In 1972 he won the Queen Elizabeth II Arts award which enabled him to study overseas.
Dawson still resides in Christchurch but now spends much of his time supervising installations of his works at sites around the world.
